| Northern California and Southern California may
be part of the same state, but in culture, climate and pride, they are
practically separate nations. There are certainly several distinct playing
populations in California, with one centered on the SoCal, LA/SD area, another
that thinks of itself as Sacramento and a third in the San Francisco Bay region,
Oakland, Alameda, Palo Alto.
NATT has been seeking a way for many years to serve this player base, and give
equal time to our Northern California friends. After all, everyone appreciates a
home game now and then! Also, the Bay Area is a great destination, full of
culture, history, scenic beauty and wonderful attractions, so players traveling there can feel as if they have 'been
somewhere' a host city with style and flavor.
Facilities there have not been easy, however. In the past we wound up
in rooms with a crowned floor or sharing space with a bar and a live
band. This time, with the help of knowledgeable locals, we've secured a
space on the campus of UC Berkeley,Recreational Sports Facility Field
House. Wooden floors and well maintained common areas and bathrooms got
our interest.
We do suggest you make your hotel and transportation decisions early, as we had
to use two hotels to find 30 rooms for our block. The Westin and the Sheraton
are both first-rate hotels, but the occupancy rate in the area is quite high.
So come to the Western Open! You'll meet some of the nicest competitors, a very
active junior community, and experience one of the great cities of the world!
NATT, as always, has the tournament operations well in hand, with fair draws, on
time scheduling and spectator friendly start times for Open Singles matches on
Sunday. Help us find the 2006 Western Open Champion in a celebration of our
favorite sport!
